Ward Bert
1950’s Mr Ward owned it and his boy in the shop was called Bernard Rose. He remembers getting people some paraffin and then using his hands without washing them to cut butter and cheese. He also remembers his boss Bert dropping lumps of cheese and butter onto the wooden floor and then he’d just blow the dust off. They would make up the blue sugar bags up the night before and put them all in line into large wooden drawers all in the line for the next day. All the orders would be made up the night before for people coming in the next day. You had to register with a shop before they would sell you anything or take an order???
