Married Margaret Evelyn Robb in 1937 in Manchester. Worked at LSE Manchester from 1930 to 1955 and is described as an engineer.

Left LSE in 1955 and became a Political Organiser with the Labour Party until 1960 when he became a Political Secretary with the Co-operative Society, staying in this job until he retired in 1981. He was a member of the board of the Merseyside Development Corporation from 1981 and a member of Merseyside County Council from 1973 to 1986.

He was Leader of the Council from 1981-82, and Chairman from 1983-84.

He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Merseyside from 1983 until his death.
