Reminiscence poetry

Lost on the Norfolk Marshes

I will always remember, it was late in December
The bag was light, the skies were grey
I should have stayed at home that day.

Snow flurries swirled around me, yet I pursued my pleasure
The weather started closing in; I thought I had its measure.
I know it now, but didn't then
Just one more look, I thought, but then
all thoughts of wildfowl fled away.
I should have stayed at home that day.

The flurries quickly turned to heavy snow
I realized that I was lost; I didn't know which way to go
Oh what a bloody fool I'd been
Here was something I had not foreseen.
Soon snow had covered every track
I could not find the long trail back
across the marsh where everything was white.
Yet not a single soul was subject to my plight
If only I could find my way.
I should have stayed at home that day.

When all at once a miracle occurred and I stood very still.
For suddenly the snow had cleared, and I could see the mill
Out there where sky met marsh, with joy how I remember.
I knew I would be home again, for Christmas in December
